New A Bryan Photo website is live!!

We are proud to announce the new A Bryan Photo website and blog! This has been a labor of love for over a year and a half and I'm ecstatic that the site is finally a reality. There are many things to share about the site and we have decided to divide the content into 2 blog posts. First we want to address why we felt a new website was a necessity for A Bryan Photo.

1. The Rebrand. As we shared previously, we underwent a rebrand of our company last year with Matchstic. Following that inspiring process, we realized we needed a website that celebrated the charm of analog capture, craftsmanship and the American South. A new website would give us this opportunity to display these passions in an interactive way. Having just a new logo and mark wasn't enough.

2. Our Process. We are very proud of our photographic process. From the cameras we use to the way we print, our site now allows us to share each step of our daily routine.

3. "Wedding, Lifestyle, Super 8" The focus of our company has changed over the past few years, primarily with the growing interest in our wedding Super 8 films. It is no longer just a side offering for a wedding day, but instead a pillar of the ABP brand. We have also seen the increased popularity our lifestyle Super 8 and Homemade Films packages. We are so excited about have a greater platform for telling more stories through motion picture.

Tomorrow we will share all the exciting features that make this site unique from our last one.

Kate & Rob, New Orleans

I'm so thankful to have been the photographer selected to document Kate and Rob's beautiful Spring wedding in the French Quarter. They created such an intentional experience for their friends and family, most of whom traveled to be there. The guests stayed at the Soniat House, walked 7 blocks to the wedding ceremony & reception at Madame John's, and then finally "second lined" through the Quarter to the historic Preservation Hall for two hours of dancing. These two carried themselves with such style and grace, and I'm excited that this shines through their images.

Kate and Rob: Second Line Polaroids

Last month I photographed the most wonderful wedding in the French Quarter. The reception ended with the arrival of the Preservation Hall band. They led wedding guests through the streets of the Quarter all the way to Preservation Hall where everyone danced for the next two hours. The images included are the polaroid negatives which we scan and then invert. More images coming soon from this amazing experience.

We're Adopting a Daughter!

My family and I are so excited to announce that we are adopting a little girl from China! We just received word from our social worker last night that we will be traveling to China in 8 days to get her. I have been wanting to share this news on the blog for some time but wanted to wait until we were ready to go. We started the process over a year ago and after an incredibly arduous year of paperwork, training and counsel we finally see the light at the end of the tunnel! God has been so gracious to our family during this time, and we feel so blessed to be adding this precious little one to our family.

We expected to get our travel approval by early June and had planned to travel after my stretch of early summer weddings. We were shocked to get our approval last night and we will now get to travel before my next wedding on June 11th.

This slogan was started by the Birmingham Chamber of Commerce in the 1960's. It will truly be nice to have our new little girl in Birmingham!

To celebrate this exciting news, we are selling all of our new ABP t-shirts online for $25. All shirts are American Apparel and the proceeds will go towards our family's travel to China!

School Photographs, In-Studio

My son goes to a very small school in our neighborhood. The school only has a handful of students, and most of them live within a mile of our home. It occurred to me recently that there were no school photos taken of the kids during the year, and I asked if I could be the "school photographer." So last month I blocked off an afternoon and had the students come by the studio for a portrait session. I even let the parents bring their other children to be photographed as well. I am really happy with the images and hope that I can do this for years to come!

This was the first time I got to use my 12ft. seamless backdrop. It was so nice to have extra space available in the frame. It's amazing what 3 extra feet adds to a composition!

I knew the farm was significant for them as they often spend their weekends there fishing, relaxing and cooking. I'm glad we decided to photograph them in place that they cherish. Shrimp Boat Expedition, Grand Isle LA

This week marks the one year anniversary of the oil spill that tragically affected so many people who live and work along our beloved Gulf Coast. My friend Jeremy Craig was in the middle of filming a documentary on Gulf Coast erosion when the spill occurred (the same friend who directed the short film, Terrebonne). The week after the spill, Jeremy asked me to join him in capturing its nasty results. We documented different fisherman along the Louisiana coast. The photos from this post are from a particular evening when we "worked" our way onto a shrimping boat in Grand Isle.

Below is an essay which Jeremy wrote this past summer. At the time it looked as though it may be their final voyage. Now a year removed from the spill, its ultimate ramifications are unknown. The fishermen however are optimistic about soon returning to a life where they continue doing what they love.

We were standing alone on the cabin roof of the Miss Andrea while, at the controls below, Captain Buff steered his 50-foot German trawler near enough to the buoy for his son TJ to secure the mooring rope to its casing. “This is the part of the fishing trip where they tie the city boys to the buoy in the middle of bay and go home,” Bryan said dryly. In another time and place, that abjectly horrific possibility might have crossed my mind—indeed, there was something unsettling about coming upon a buoy floating alone in the darkness of a vast and empty sea. But the last several hours aboard Buff’s boat hauling shrimp, drinking cheap beer and listening to a wacky mix of classic rock and adult contemporary with his beguiling crew, had me feeling perfectly comfortable. What was there to worry about? After all, this was the man who, unbeknownst to Bryan and me, had discreetly welcomed us and our equipment aboard even though our contact Dave hadn’t given him the heads up about “the plan” for us to join him. (This became public knowledge mid-voyage—the fact that Dave didn’t have a nickname should have tipped us off.)

Bryan and I were in Grand Isle working on a documentary about coastal Louisiana, an environment and way of life that was eroding into the gulf at the rate of a football field every forty-five minutes—and that was before millions of gallons of harmful oil began suffocating its beaches, marshes and bayous. Having spent the day drinking our way around the island (hey, “when in Rome…”), we were told that if we wanted to get out on the water, to head to the dock at the eastern tip of the island, that we’d be allowed aboard a shrimping trawler heading out into the bay at dusk. Although we greeted these vague instructions with skepticism, we went anyway and, looking back, I’ll be forever grateful that we put aside our reservations and did as we were told—I’ll never forget that night aboard the Miss Andrea with Buff and his anachronistic crew.

I was sad to learn that just days after this extraordinary trip, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries closed down fishing in the zones around Grand Isle. And at the time of this writing, there’s no telling when Buff will again drop the nets of the Miss Andrea—it could be a year, it could be decades. For 65-year old Buff, who was born and raised in Grand Isle, who dropped out of middle school to start a forty-two year career of shrimping, the distinct probability that the oil spill could forever affect his livelihood and alter his way of life is worse than the idea of being stranded on a buoy in the middle of the night—unfathomably worse.

These are Bryan’s poignant images of one night spent working on a shrimp boat—my very first, quite possibly one of Buff’s very last.

Lauren and Philip got married on Little New Year's Eve in New Orleans. The day was incredible, highlighted by one of the most amazing finishes to a wedding I have ever experienced.
For those unfamiliar with NOLA culture, its customary to do a "second line" at wedding receptions. Here's the basic concept. A brass band plays and marches around (they would be the primary line) like in a parade. The guests (the second line) then follow said band while dancing and singing. The guest typically wave hankies while the bride and groom spin parasols. I've photographed second lines in the past but they have all taken place in and around the reception hall. Lauren and Philip, on the other hand, had a police escorted second line down Bourbon Street. Keep in mind this was the day before New Year's Eve and the French Quarter was packed! The experience will go down as one of my top 5 wedding moments of all time. Truly amazing.

Homemade Films: Teryn & Steve, Western Europe

Above is the latest installment of Teryn and Steve's Homemade Films' Series. Because they loved their honeymoon Super 8 that we edited, they chose to take the kit on a recent trip to Western Europe.

The kit also includes a Lomo LCA+ in order to capture still images. While Teryn and Steve shot with the Lomo, they also took their personal Rollei for documentation. Below are some of their beautiful images from the trip.

ABP Retreat, Super 8

Every winter my team and I take a trip to North Carolina to set goals for the future while also reflecting on our past year's work. It's an incredible couple days and we always leave with a laundry list of things to do so that we may improve our process and experience. We also leave plenty of time for play and relaxation. Here's a Super 8 film that Branden shot of us sledding. A truck had made a groove in the snow with its tire track and it froze over. This was optimal for a quick (yet controlled) trip down the mountain.

I mentioned in a recent post that this has been a bittersweet season for A Bryan Photo. For the last year I have known that the Kuhns planned to move to Australia. While I really wanted to be happy about their journey, it was hard to ignore the large hole that would be left in our company with their departure. Both Chase and Amy played vital roles in the operation of A Bryan Photo. Who would pick up where they left off?

Enter Clark and Caroline. This past July, I shot their wedding in Nashville. When they came to Birmingham after the wedding to preview the images in our studio, Clark shared his desire to learn the photography trade. Caroline, who had worked with Anthropologie in New York, also expressed her love of styling and a desire to style photo shoots. It became clear that they could fill the void with the Kuhns leaving. God's providence is a crazy thing. I'm so thankful that they were willing to take a chance and move here from Nashville and begin working with us. Clark will be my main assistant this year. Caroline will be teaming up with me to style my lifestyle sessions. She's also in charge of our packaging and presentation.

I'm thrilled to have them as new additions to the A Bryan Photo team.

Winter weddings were meant to be captured with high speed black and white film. These are a few of my favorites from Laura and Gilmore's wedding. They rode on the back of a convertible from their ceremony to the reception at the Birmingham Museum of Art. After leaving the museum that night, they strolled through Lynn Park on their way to the hotel.

Farewell, Kuhns.

It's been a bitter sweet season for the A Bryan Photo family. Last month, Chase and Amy Kuhn (& baby Olive!) moved to Sydney, Australia in order for Chase to pursue his doctorate in Theology. The Kuhn's have been a staple of our company for the past 3 years and pioneered the start of our other photography company, 509 Photo. More importantly, these two have become some of our closest friends.
It's been incredible to watch Chase transform from a weekend assistant to one of my main peers in photography industry. His vision for the craft has sharpened and refined my own style, and I look forward to this continuing. Amy worked incredibly hard to change the way our clients experience their images. Her vision gave our photographs the presentation they deserve. We started making prints for all our shoots and Amy packaged them with great care.

They will be greatly missed and their impact on ABP will be felt for years to come.

It recently was brought to my attention that I never blogged one of my favorite weddings of 2009, Mia & Christian. The wedding took place on the grounds of the beautiful Belmont Conference Center outside of Baltimore. We had the privilege of staying on the property with the other guests, which made for an intimate shooting environment. Mia owns the bridal boutique Garnish and put her own experience to work in the designing and styling of her own wedding. Mia's friend Katie, of Petal and Print, provided all the print design for the wedding.

I'm thankful that Mia and Christian chose me to document their wedding and I'm proud to call them friends.

Homemade Films: Penelope Lane

A few months ago, my wife Lindsey & I went to the the new Railroad Park in downtown Birmingham with our new dog Penelope. Knowing that she would only be a puppy for so long, we wanted to do a short video of our time there to solidify her into our memories. We brought along the Homemade Films Super 8 camera to capture the running around and relaxing that we have come to associate with both the park and Penelope. Having taken the kit a few times before with us (Our Honeymoon, New York City, Highway 1), we're starting to develop "Volumes" of our lives to view over and over and pass on to our kids. I hope you enjoy the latest installment.

A Bryan Photo Fine Art Prints

After walking through our recent rebrand with Matchstic, we wanted to continue putting more emphasis on the tangible image. We've always put creative energy into the capturing & editing of our photographs, only to hand the role of printing the image over to someone else. After being underwhelmed by the results of other printers, we set out to create something better. We made a big decision to move all of our print fulfillment in house and restore our reverence for the fine art photograph.

To become printmakers, we first had to research paper types, the printing process, and color management. Through much hard work we settled on a process that we loved and that looked incredible.

So what makes our prints distinctive?

1) The paper. After testing many papers decided to go with a fine art stock by Hahnemuhle. Founded in 1584, these German papermakers have made a name amongst artists worldwide by superbly mastering this old craft. Their paper truly is a perfect home for our images.

2) The process. All of our photographs are printed on Epson's Pro 3880. Because the ink mixes with the fibers of the paper, we leave the prints on a photo rack for three days so that the images can dry. Then, we apply two rounds of clear spray coating to protect the outer layer from scratches and moisture. Lastly, we cut every image by hand.

3) The presentation. The photographs are then hand-wrapped and sent to the client.

We also are thrilled with our workspace for this new endeavor. Branden's father is a carpenter and built this custom print station from Branden's design:

The Rebrand

This past year we have had the privilege of going through a rebrand with Matchstic, a Brand Identity House in Atlanta. While our current brand is relatively strong in the eyes of our clients and followers, it didn't communicate the overall story of A Bryan Photo like we wanted. Matchstic assured us that the changes to our brand would be evolutionary in nature and the core "look" of our company would remain intact.

The current logo was nice but didn't have any depth... simply three angles of a camera not even specifically connected to our work. We wanted to keep the analog feel but with an updated and more sophisticated look. We gave Matchstic freedom to take it from there.

With a mission to give purpose to our "look", they created hand-drawn illustrations based on the actual cameras in the A Bryan Photo arsenal. Also, the illustration style harkens back to the line art of letterpress and hand-crafted printing methods. Lastly, we added the word "Birmingham" because our location in the American South influences our style of photography and personality as a studio. The new mark (or marks) point us in the direction of the story we hope to tell daily with our viewers.

You may have noticed small uses of the new mark and type sets on the blog or on printed materials you received in the mail from us. We will slowly implement the new brand throughout this spring, the culmination being an incredible new website due to arrive in April. Keep an eye out for blog posts on how this refresh is affecting our approach and deliverables.

Allison and Matt, Charleston

Allison & Matt's wedding was one of the most emotion I have ever experienced. In addition to the wedding, I had the pleasure of shooting their rehearsal dinner the night before. By the end of the night, everyone (including myself) was weeping with joy for this incredible couple. Their love had experienced a lot, and that love was very evident the entire weekend.

It was a joy to capture these moments.

Daniel Bashta, Album Cover Session

I often say that photographing a wedding is only the beginning of a beautiful relationship. I love seeing how past wedding clients end up using me for their future endeavors. I photographed Daniel's marriage to his beautiful wife Taylor in October of 2007 and we've stayed friends since. Daniel is a worship leader at a church in Atlanta and recently hired me to capture images for his latest album.

I'm very weary of band photography. It's often too forced; like the band takes themselves way too seriously. I wanted the session to feel natural and straight forward. Daniel brought a few props that went along with the theme of his album (Like a Lion), and I brought an arsenal of cameras. We played around Atlanta for a full afternoon, and I'm pleased with what we captured. Below are a few favorites.

A Bryan Photo Workshop: Super 8 & Images!

I love this Super 8 film which highlights our last workshop here in Birmingham. Viewing it reminds of the imagination and curiosity that is sparked when a group of photographers get together with pockets full of film and an arsenal of film cameras at their disposal. The sense of wonder amongst the group is contagious. It is this feeling that I return to when people want to debate film vs. digital. All I know is that I feel like a giddy school boy when I have a film camera in my hands. And the results continue to make my heart beat a little faster. Until digital does the same for me, I'm sticking with film!

Mast Brothers Chocolate

Mast Brothers are chocolatiers based out of Brooklyn, NY, and they are artisans to the core. Their devotion to their craft is unrivaled. During our workshop in November we showed the attendees a video about Mast Brothers. One of the attendees, Kate Byars, sent us a box of their chocolate bars after the workshop was over. My team and I couldn't stop looking at how beautifully this chocolate was presented. If you like dark chocolate, and I mean really dark, you have to try one of their bars.

Thanksgiving

We spent this Thanksgiving at my parent's home in Atlanta, and it was made especially great by my wife's incredible cooking. She slaved away in the kitchen for two days and (almost) single-handedly created a feast for all of my relatives. She teamed up with my brother's wife Kari, who provided all the decor on the tables.

Every year PDN devotes an issue to the top wedding images of the year. Their selection is considered to be the most revered in the industry and its always a huge honor to be have one of my images selected. Each image costs about $50 per submission so I have to chose wisely. It can nearly drive me insane trying to choose my favorite images over a whole year's worth of work. I finally settled on these four images. Surprisingly, all four images were captured with a Rolleiflex.

The Daniel Family deserves to be known as A Bryan Photo's First Family. We've had the privilege of documenting the weddings of all three Daniel children (Meg, Alex & Emily) over the last two years. Over this time we have gained an amazing friendship with these lovely folks. In October, we photographed Emily & Alex's wedding. We are sad that this is the final Daniel wedding we will photograph until the next generation comes to fruition.

Emily & Alex chose to get married on the farm where Emily grew up in Fairhope, AL. Most of the details were hand crafted by Emily and her family. Even the wedding alter was built by Emily's father with help from Alex. The entire day felt so unforced and natural, a dream wedding for us to capture.

It was truly an honor to document the wedding of my good friend Jeremy and his beautiful bride Meredith. The wedding was full of grace and style, which is a perfect representation of this lovely couple. They choose to have the wedding at one of my favorite sites in Birmingham, Swan Lake. Swan Lake is a horse stable which can be used for weddings and events. Here are my favorite images from the day.

At the workshop last week, Brian Greenberg of Richard Photo Lab was telling me how I can scan the negative side of the 3000 speed Fuji instant film, invert it, and have an incredible image as the final product. I was very skeptical that it really would turn out well but I'm blown away by the result. Here's a shot that I took during the second day of the workshop of Caroline and Clark. I took it on my Polaroid 195 that Brian gave me while he was here in Birmingham for the workshop. Such an incredible gift!

I look forward to doing this more. Look out for more scanned polaroid negs.

We just wrapped our workshop this week and we had such an incredible group of photographers who joined us. The first day we photographed each other around my studio, and they all had access to any of our analog cameras. We started on the roof of our building and rain forced us to set up some strobes in the lobby. Below are a few of my favorite shots from the photographers. All of the film shot was provided by Kodak and all the scanning was done courtesy of Richard Photo Lab who got us these images the following day!

Many of you know my love affair with Matchstic, the branding and design house out of Atlanta. They have branded A Bryan Photo since the beginning and they have always done an amazing job. Investing in our brand has been such a vital part of our success as a photography studio. It has changed not only the way others view us, but the way we view ourselves. At the beginning of this year Matchstic began working on an evolutionary rebrand of A Bryan Photo. They have "evolved" the brand by keeping a similar feel while helping us narrow our focus and tell a better story. I will post more on this re-brand soon.

Lindsey & I got a dog. Her name is Penelope (Penny for short), and she's a terrier mix that we adopted from the Birmingham Humane Society. She's amazing. Bryan is a pretty big fan of her as well, so he offered to take some pictures for us. As you know, Bryan isn't a pet photographer but still did an incredible job capturing all of our personalities. Introducing A Bryan Photo Homemade Films

We are so proud to introduce a revolutionary offering for the faithful followers of A Bryan Photo. We are constantly trying to find ways to make our products and services more readily available to those who aren't getting married but who still value remarkable documentation of important life events.

We made a big step in this direction last year when we announced our NYC Christmas sessions (this year's NYC Christmas session will be announced next week!). But those sessions still required our physical presence for the documentation of those moments.

Our desire is to create an offering that couples your personal documentation with our presentation and story telling capabilities. This has led us to create Homemade Films. Homemade Films allows anybody to rent a film kit which includes one Super 8 video camera, a LOMO, and a Holga. Also included would be the film (both Super 8 and photographic) and a video tutorial DVD on how to use all the cameras. Once the event is captured you then mail the kit and all exposed film back for us to process, edit and present to you in final form.

When would one rent said kit? For a family trip. For Thanksgiving weekend. For a Honeymoon. For the birth of your child. For anytime you want to document your family while keeping it just the family.

We recently had a bride and groom use this offering on their honeymoon. We sent them away from the wedding with our Homemade Films kit, and they sent it back a few weeks later for us to process, scan, and edit their images and film.

I'd been excited about documenting Caroline and Clark's wedding ever since I met them this past November. They were passing through Birmingham at the time and they got to stop by the studio. It was intended to be a brief introduction yet it turned into an evening of connection and inspiration. They both were so excited to be part of the A Bryan Photo family and I spent hours with them both walking them through our whole process and what they could expect. I had the honor of hearing all about Caroline's passion for design and Clark's love of travel. Clark and his twin brother Campbell had spent their summers touring the world for their employer EF tours while Caroline had interned with Anthropologie in New York. I got to hear the incredible story of Clark flying Caroline to Italy to propose with a ring that he made in New Zealand (where he was working as a shepherd, no less).
The wedding took place at Wightman Chapel on the Vanderbilt campus with a reception following in Caroline's parents backyard. With so much grace, style and all-out energy this wedding was even more beautiful than I could've imagine. I'm proud to call these two friends and I look forward to many more adventures (and photoshoots!) throughout our lifetime.

A Bryan Photo Workshop: November 14th - 17th, 2010

We are so excited to announce our next workshop which will take place in Birmingham this November!

Here's a few things of note that will make this event unique and remarkable:

The A Bryan Photo Process. My team and I will be sharing insights into our entire process. We will be discussing the creation of timeless imagery on film & how to present photographs to your clients that will make a lasting impression. We will also discuss the importance of a well run studio and how you can wow your clients through the details.

Guest Speakers. We have always prided ourselves on the guest speakers who we get to speak at our workshops. This year is no different. Craig Johnson of Matchstic will be presenting on the power of branding and Calder Clark of Blue Moon Events will present on the relationship between photographer and event planner. These two are both so smart and insightful. You won't want to miss what they have to say about you and your industry

The Sponsors. Kodak will be donating a large amount of film for all who attend to shoot with and take home. Richard Photo Lab will be here to walk photographers through the ins and outs of their incredible lab. Even if you aren't a film shooter, it will be a great time to get familiar with the medium of film in a safe and constructive environment. Cypress Albums will be available to discuss the power of presentation through the use of their handmade products.

The Shooting (and Critique). For the first time ever at an A Bryan Photo workshop we are going to be able to shoot film and have scans available the following day for critique and review from me and my team. This will allow attendees to quickly learn from the first day of shooting and make corrections before the next film shoot! We will also allow photographers to make final prints on our Epson 3880.

Three Days! This is the first workshop with three full days of shooting and education. All others have only been two days. With more emphasis on shooting time, we wanted to add an extra day so that we could still have plenty of time for education.

Teryn & Steve (Images & Interview)

I recently posted the Super 8 for this superb wedding in Calgary and I'm proud to now post the images. This wedding meant a lot to us personally because of how gracious Teryn & Steve have been to our studio. When we arrived to our hotel before the wedding, we had 3 wrapped presents waiting for us. The first gift was Teryn & Steve's favorite Canadian film, the second was a map of Banff National Park (which we toured on our day off) and in the final gift were CD's from their favorite Canadian bands (Feist, Sam Roberts, Winter Sleep, Dan Mangan, etc). We had yet to meet them and already they were beyond hospitable to us. We also knew how much these two loved film. They only own film cameras and that's how they have chosen to document their lives.
The wedding was amazing and their friends and family were so lovely to document. We even had seats at dinner with some of their best friends. This wedding will go down as a very high point to an already amazing summer of weddings.
I asked Teryn and Steve if I could ask them a few questions about their wedding and why they chose to fly A Bryan Photo to Calgary from the American South. This Q & A can be found at the end of this post.

Q & A with Teryn & Steve

Your wedding was in Calgary, how did you decide to fly in two documentarians from the American South?
Photography has always been a very important part of our lives and long before we were engaged, we discussed our wedding photographer- who would we choose to shoot such an important day? After Steve proposed, we spent hours scrolling through wedding photographers’ portfolios. We had a few ideas of what we wanted, but mostly we just tried to imagine ourselves in their pictures. And mostly we failed.
A lot of photographers seem to favour an editorial look with strong backgrounds and fierce poses. Now we’re all for fashion photography, but when most people do model-fierce-face, it looks more like indigestion. Not really the look we were going for.
We wanted our wedding pictures to reflect how we FELT more so than how hawt we were. We wanted our grandchildren to be able to look through our wedding photos and see how much their grandparents loved each other. The more photographers we looked at, the more disappointed we became. No one seemed like a great fit.
Eventually we found a local photographer that we planned on using but it never felt quite right.
One day while Teryn was wading through the near-100 blogs on her reader looking for wedding inspiration, she stumbled upon a video link. It was the 8mm of Melanie & Patrick’s wedding made by A Bryan Photo. It was also love at first sight. We watched it over and over and over again. It was exactly what we had both been quietly hoping for- timeless, heartfelt and personal.
We raced through Bryan’s website, scrolled through each album, shocked into silence that we had found exactly what we had been looking for. We felt like we were a part of each wedding and knew each of the couples. You felt the excitement, the nerves, the relief, the love. You felt like their friend. It’s a good thing we live in Canada, because if we had seen any of these couples in the street we would have launched ourselves at them, demanded a hug and told them how happy we were to have been at their wedding!
We hadn’t planned on hiring a videographer, but that 8mm cemented it in our plans. Back to Google we went, trying to find a videographer that was a little closer to home. No luck, though. We couldn’t find anyone in Calgary, or even Canada, who was able to tell the story with such character and emotion the way A Bryan Photo did.
We decided to book the 8mm right away, but we were still a little unsure about flying two photographers across the continent. Our families thought that we were crazy to bring our photographers in from Birmingham when there were so many photographers close to home.
Eventually we realized that we had to go with what felt right to us. A Bryan was just perfect on so many levels. Plus, they looked like a lot of fun! It seemed like every week the guys posted a new video of themselves doing anything but working- Monday morning dance parties, sweet scooter tricks, and surprisingly well-choreographed musicals. They just seemed like the kind of people you’d want to hang out with all the time, which was a pretty awesome choice. You spend a lot of time with the photographer on your wedding day, and (aside from the obvious benefit of it being more fun) having a photographer who tells jokes puts you at ease and you can tell in all Bryan’s work that the smiles are genuine.

Your vows mention that "you promise to always use film cameras to capture your moments". Why is film important to you two?
For us, there are so many things to love about film. The colour, the depth, the texture. But more so, I think we love the time it takes to set up a shot with film. You don’t just point your camera at something and shoot fifty frames, you have to think about it. While you’re metering for light and choosing film, you consider the image, the composition, what that shot means to you, and what it says about you.
Rather than a shot taken in passing, it becomes a dialogue between you and your environment. You set up your shot and wait for the perfect moment to take the shot. Your subject leaves an impact on you and you on it.
And really, film cameras are just so much fun. Nothing will ever beat to the sound of the shutter or the feel of advancing film. You can’t help but fall in love with them.

What is one word you hoped your friends and fam would use to describe their experience at your wedding?
Oh gosh, this is a tough one. It’s hard to narrow it down to just one word, but if we HAD to (and Bryan is a taskmaster so I guess we do) I think it would be “warm”. We so wanted our guests to feel welcome and comfortable and loved and appreciated.

What is one specific memory that you will always take with you from the day?
One of our favourite memories from our wedding day was walking though the shower of sparklers held up by our friends and family at the end of the night. Looking back and seeing everyone we loved laughing together and twirling sparklers was the most incredible sight.

Steve, in his vows to Teryn, said "I promise to always use film cameras to capture our moments." We've seen couples get excited about the Rolleiflex or get confused by the Holga, but never have I met a pair with more of a passion for film shooting than Teryn & Steve. They own a lot of the same cameras we have and even did a bit of shooting themselves on their big day. Upon leaving, we gave them a Super 8 camera to use on their honeymoon... footage to follow soon.

Natalie & Phil Engagement

I've often wondered who Ashley's sister, Natalie, would settle down with. Ashley and Natalie are extremely close and I always hoped that he would be someone who I genuinely wanted to hang out with, not just tolerated. I also hoped it would be someone who adored Nat and understood how beautiful she truly is.
Enter Phil Markham. Phil was an exchange student from Australia who came over to study Theology at a local seminary (Beeson Divinity School). Phil and I quickly became friends and colleagues when he started attending our church and soon after started assisting me at weddings last summer. We took several trips across the southeast, which meant we spent tons of time in a car picking each other's brains about work, family, God, etc. I loved his curiosity and sense of awe for life and people. In the back of my mind, I always wanted to connect him with Natalie. Last Fall, the two of them began hanging out (with slight influence from Ash and me) and by May they decided they wanted to spend their lives together.
I'm so honored that I'm now able to call Phil my brother. He is such a perfect fit for Natalie and our family.

Ah, the power of online social networking... Beth and I were friends when we were in 7th grade and became reacquainted recently through Facebook. She and Nathan got married on June 5th and invited me along to shoot their Super 8 in Key West, Florida. My wife Lindsey came along as my lovely assistant.

Lately, I've been taking my Lomo and Holga with me to weddings. I find they fit well with the style of Super 8 and the auto exposures keep the shooting simple.

Enjoy a beautiful sunny beach wedding and one of the best first dances you're likely to see at a wedding.

Christina and Chris live in New York but chose to get married at Christina's uncle's home in Florence, Alabama. Christina spent her childhood summer's at this cabin on the Tennessee River. She hoped that they could have a wedding that reflected the peace and joy of her time there while young. With a ceremony by the water, a reception among the pine trees, and bbq provided by her uncle's smoker, they created an experience that their guests won't soon forget. This was Alabama at its finest.
